Chargeback apps for Shopify: the three pricing models
Last checked 3 November 2026
Most chargeback apps on the Shopify App Store fall into three models. They differ less in what they write than in how they charge and who presses submit. This page describes the models with figures read from the apps' own listings, so you can compare like with like. It names RebutCase where it is one of the options; it does not rank anyone.
Model 1: a share of what is recovered
The app writes and usually submits the response itself, and charges a percentage of each dispute that goes your way, often with a per-alert fee for prevention alerts. On 7 October 2026 the listings we read showed shares between 10% and 25% of recovered amounts, and alerts priced per alert.
- Fits a store that wants no involvement at all and has few, large disputes.
- Check: whether the share applies to disputes you would have won anyway, what each alert costs, and what is charged after you uninstall.
- Check: whether you can see the response before it is sent.
Model 2: prevention alerts, paid per alert
Card network alert services (Ethoca, Verifi and similar) warn you of a dispute early so you can refund before it becomes a chargeback. Apps built on them charge per alert, in the listings we read between about $15 and $29 each.
- Fits a store with a chargeback rate near a network threshold, where each avoided chargeback matters more than the refund.
- Check: whether the alert triggers an automatic refund, and the total cost in a busy month.
Model 3: a flat monthly plan, you submit
The app gathers the evidence, writes the response and saves it to the dispute; you review it and press submit in Shopify. Billing is a fixed monthly amount through Shopify, with no share of recoveries and no per-alert fee. RebutCase is in this group: Free with 2 response packs a month, then $19, $49 and $99 plans.
- Fits a store that wants to see every sentence that goes to the bank and keep the cost predictable.
- Check: what counts as a pack or a case, whether checks and previews are free, and whether the app keeps Shopify's own pre-filled evidence.
How the models compare
| Share of recovery | Per-alert prevention | Flat plan, you submit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who submits | The app, automatically (some offer review first) | Usually refund rather than respond | You, in Shopify |
| What you pay | A percentage of recovered amounts, plus alert fees | A fee per alert | A fixed monthly amount billed by Shopify |
| Cost when a dispute goes your way | A share of it | None, if no alert | None beyond the plan |
| Evidence rating | Some show scores that predict outcomes | Not applicable | Describes the evidence only, never the outcome |
| Changes to Shopify's pre-filled evidence | Not described on the listings we read | Not applicable | Shown as a diff and need your tick (RebutCase) |
Questions to ask any chargeback app
Figures above are from App Store listings read on 7 October 2026 and may have changed; check each listing before deciding. This page is written by the makers of RebutCase.
- Does it submit without me, and can I turn that off?
- Does it cite where each claim in the response comes from?
- What exactly is billed, through whom, and what stops when I uninstall?
- Does it keep what Shopify already filled in, or overwrite it?
- Does it promise outcomes? Nobody can: the cardholder's bank decides every dispute.
Questions merchants ask
Does Shopify already answer chargebacks for me?
With Shopify Payments, Shopify sends the order, address, tracking and refund details on the due date even if you do nothing. It cannot send the evidence only you have, and it does not tell you what is missing for the reason the bank gave.
Is a chargeback app worth it for a store with a few disputes a year?
A flat plan with a free tier costs nothing for a store that sees two disputes a month or fewer. Share-of-recovery apps cost only when a dispute goes your way, but take a share of each.
